NAC, N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (N-Acetylcysteine), is a sulfhydryl-containing antioxidant that increases free radical trapping in cellular reservoirs, and is also a mucolytic agent, acting on the principle that it breaks the disulfide bond (-S-S-) of the peptide bond of the mucin protein, causing the mucin protein to turn into a small-molecule peptide chain, which relaxes and removes phlegm It relaxes and removes the viscosity of sputum. NAC is functionally equivalent to glutathione in that both have antioxidant properties based on sulfhydryl function and both protect the body from peroxidative stress damage induced by infectious shock.NAC inhibits apoptosis in neuronal cells but also induces apoptosis in smooth muscle cells.NAC also inhibits HIV replication and also serves as a substrate for microsomal glutathione transferase (GST).

Function and Application:
1. N-Acetyl-L-cysteine can be used as a mucolytic agent in medicine. NAC Powder is often used to make NAC Capsules.
2. N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine can be used in biochemical research, is a biochemical reagent. In medicine, NAC can be used as an expectorant, called phlegm easy to clean, easy to cough quiet.
3. NAC can also be used for the detoxification of acetaminophen poisoning, NAC has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, microvascular dilation, protection of DNA molecules and other pharmacological effects.
4. Acetylcysteine as a thiol compound reacts directly with free radicals and non-free radical oxidizing agents.
5. N-Acetyl Cysteine has anti-inflammatory effects. N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine Powder is an ingredient in NAC supplements.
6. NAC inhibits platelet agglutination and prevents adhesion, as well as inhibits endotoxin and its cytokines that lead to the release of cytokines from liver nonparenchymal cells.
